Meeting The Teacher

Embodied light,
he called me,

said each of us
is an embodied light,
each of us born
illuminating our own steps
and then the steps of
those who would follow;

I reminded him, gently
but with certainty,
that behind them
would come long shadows
and they would be
embodied too;

he said,

we walk from dark toward light
and into dark and into light
and make the dark and make the light
as always
and it does not change
who we are at heart
to know that,

even if sometimes
the light we are
goes out.
